Why supergirl and captain marvel have the same last name?

Let’s see who came first, Carol Danvers or Kara Danvers.

The competition between Captain Marvel and Supergirl has always existed, especially considering that both characters are tremendously similar in terms of physicality and are called the same. But, besides, Carol Danvers and Kara Danvers are female versions of previous superheroes, specifically Superman and Captain Marvel. It has always been thought that both were the result of the rivalry between DC and Marvel but the truth is that neither has admitted to being a copy of the other. Now Screenrant has gotten a little deeper into the discussion.

As incredible as it may seem, everything points to being a mere coincidence between the two companies. Supergirl was created in 1959 and her Kryptonian name was Kara-Zor. Her first human name was Linda Lee. It wasn’t until two years later that her adoptive family, the Danvers, was created, and she stuck with the name we know her today. In 1967 Carol Danvers was born for Marvel, but she wasn’t even a superhero, she just acted as Captain Marvel’s love interest. She was an officer in the United States Air Force and it wasn’t until 1977 that she became superpowered.

So Marvel may have made their Danvers a superhero to compete with Supergirl, but it was many years after naming her. His last name is a coincidence. Hopefully one day both companies will join forces and we’ll see the Danvers together.
